The route for the GAAR 2010 moves to the beautiful east coast of Australia
and follows a course, starting at Melbourne's Essendon Airport down into the South
Gippsland region of Victoria, up through the Great Dividing Range, and finishing on
Queensland's Gold Coast.
The event starts with a couple
of casual Flight Legs down to Phillip Island and across the South Gippsland coast line to
ease us into the routine of VFR and VOR / NDB navigation. It then heads north into
the Victorian High Country and ski field regions. The weather here can be tricky at
the best of times and many a pilot has payed the ultimate price for not flight planning
thoroughly or just being outright foolhardy.
Turning eastward, the route
drops down to the New South Wales South Coast region continues through the Great Dividing
Range south of Canberra and then on to the Southern Highlands region of New South Wales.
We then push west across the so called "impenetrable barrier" of the Blue
Mountains before heading north into the New England Tablelands. Finally, we head for
the glorious Gold Coast where every Victorian goes to retire and every Queenslander leaves
because there are so many Victorians.
The Flight Schedule and
Reporting Dates for each Flight Leg are detailed in the table below. PIREPs for each
Flight Leg must be received by 2359 hrs UTC on the date indicated. Any late PIREPs
will result in a "withdrawn" being recorded against the entrant. PIREPs
can be submitted in advance of the required Reporting date. All details regarding
PIREP submission are under the "PIREPs" link.
